Larry Harrington passed away in Canberra on 1st August, aged 91. Larry was the leader of the 1958-9 New Zealand Geological and Survey Program and made the first ascent of Mount Discovery at the mouth of McMurdo Sound in December 1959.
Larry subsequently worked in the Australian Bureau of Mineral Resources. He attended at least one Canberra Midwinter dinner and was well known to ANARE Club members in the ACT.
His exploits are recorded in David Harrowfield’s 2007 book Call of the Ice – Fifty Years of New Zealand in Antarctica.
Larry is survived by three children and four grandchildren. His wife Anne died some years earlier.
