Alan Mailler Brown passed away earlier this year in April from Parkinson’s and major Stroke damage after a long battle being in care for the past 7 years.
Alan graduated from Melbourne University in Mechanical Engineering in 1958, after which he was employed at the Commonwealth Department of Works in Hawthorn. Then in 1960 Alan took up and commenced in the position of Senior engineer for the Australian Antarctic Research Expeditions.
Alan had sailed to Antarctica on Nella Dan for the Summer expeditions and was a major contributor to the construction of Casey Station. Daughter, Cynthia, and her brother, Timothy, have recollections of their father leaving on the ship each summer, and were photographed on the wharf in 1964 by the Herald Sun, with Alan playing a song prior to departure.
He was proud to have Brown Bay named after him in honour of his outstanding contribution to ANARE between 1961-1970 in the construction of Casey Station which overlooks the bay.
