Dick Thompson commenced duty as Supply Officer with the Antarctic Division of the Department of External Affairs in late 1950. His duties involved the provisioning of all equipment, stores, fuel and foodstuffs for the ANARE stations on the sub-Antarctic Heard and Macquarie Islands.
Dick assumed the additional duties of Marine Operations Officer and spent three months each year at sea running the landing operations at the stations and in coastal mapping operations.
Dick served for five years as Supply Officer and another five years as Admin Officer. In the latter role he was responsible to the Director for everything that was not science.
