Harry Burton

Biologist

6/08/1940 – 21/09/2024

Harry wintered twice at Davis station in 1974 and 1978 and also spent five summers there.  He was the organiser and field leader of three Heard Island summer expeditions from 1985 to 1987. The last expedition ran to nearly six months after the loss of Nella Dan and consequent disruption to the shipping schedule. Harry was a dedicated scientist whose major projects included the limnology of the lakes of the Vestfold Hills and Elephant Seal studies on Macquarie Island. Burton Lake in the Vestfold Hills is named after him. Harry had a huge impact on a cohort of early career researchers.

Harry Roy Burton — Antarctic Medal recipient 1987

Harry Burton has spent approximately three and a half years in Antarctica, comprising two winters (1974 and 1978) and five summers at Davis station, conducting research on Antarctic biology and geochemical limnology. He also spent three months as leader of a summer party on Heard Island in 1985. Much of his work has been conducted from remote field camps in difficult conditions.

His knowledge, enthusiasm and ability have been a constant stimulus to the other biologists who have been involved in the Davis lakes program and it is very largely due to his enterprise and effort that Australia’s Antarctic work in limnology is so well regarded throughout the world.
