As we reach the end of a massive year, I wanted to send you a big and well-earned Merry Christmas.

As Minister for the Environment and Water, I’m blessed to work with some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and determined advocates for nature anywhere in the world.

You’ve been an enormous help in my transition to the portfolio this year. You’ve come to me with your honest advice. You’ve come to me with your fresh ideas. You’ve come to me with your professional wisdom – the kind that can only be earned through years of experience and hard work.

These conversations have helped build the foundation for our ambitious agenda. And they’ve helped establish the necessary momentum for change.

Together, we’ve already made a significant start in our mission to protect and restore Australia’s environment.

We’ve legislated a more ambitious emissions reduction target. We’ve began the process of rewriting Australia’s environmental laws, to stop new extinctions and build a nature positive future. We’ve announced the new Environment Protection Agency. We’ve fought on the world stage for a landmark global deal to protect nature. We’ll create a circular economy by 2030. And we’ve invested $1.8 billion in the budget, to protect the Great Barrier Reef, to save native species, to support Landcare rangers, to fund the Environmental Defenders Office, and to grow Indigenous Protected Areas across Australia.

It’s been a huge year. And next year will be even bigger. I hope you take some time out to rest and recharge over the break – and to get out and about across our beautiful land.

Thank you again for all your important work in support of Australia’s environment. It’s already making a big difference.
